This Is What Happens When A Lizard Bites You Or Falls Into Your Food

There is common misconception among people regarding the venomous effects of a snake bite or a lizard bite. In India 95% of the snakes are non-venomous. Speaking about lizards, the only poisonous ones are Beaded lizard & Gila monster and they both are residents of North America. The most commonly found lizard in India is the pale colored “common house gecko” (chipkali) which is completely” Non-Venomous” .

What happens when a Lizard falls into your food or drink??

The biggest misconception in our country while talking about lizard’s is that they have poison in their tail and when a person consumes the food infected by the poison the person dies. That’s completely wrong. A lizard contains a lot of bacteria in its mouth and body that causes food poisoning when someone eats the food in which the lizard has fallen. It is similar to the infection caused by eating stale food or contaminated food.  The common symptoms are

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Watery or bloody diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Fever

Medium to large geckos may bite if distressed; however, their bite is gentle and will not pierce skin.

Other minor misconceptions

In some parts of India, the sound made by geckos is considered a bad omen; while in West Bengal, Bangladesh and Nepal, it is considered to be an endorsement of the truthfulness of a statement made just before, because the sound “tik tik tik” coincides with “thik thik thik”, which in many Indian languages (e.g. Bengali), means “right right right”, i.e., a three-fold confirmation. The cry of a gecko from an east wall as one is about to embark on a journey is considered auspicious, but a cry from any other wall is supposed to be inauspicious. A gecko falling on someone’s right shoulder is considered good omen, but a bad omen if it drops on the left shoulder. In Punjab, it is believed that contact with the urine of a gecko will cause leprosy. In some places in India, it is believed that watching a lizard on the eve of Dhanteras is a good omen or a sign of prosperity.

There is no proven news of death by common house lizard. Most of the times fake news created for viral views spread such panic and misconception among us. On the contrary, lizards are eco-friendly organisms which are important for the ecosystem. They balance the number of insects and rodents in the environment.
